La película alemana “Sin novedad en el frente”, dirigida por Edward Berger, se impuso como Mejor Película internacional en la 95° edición de los Premios Oscar, que se celebró este domingo en el Teatro Dolby de Los Ángeles, y puso fin al sueño argentino de ganar la tercera estatuilla de su historia con “Argentina 1985”.
El film, con nueve nominaciones, partía como uno de los favoritos a llevarse mayor cantidad de estatuillas.
La adaptación de “Sin novedad en el frente”, que Berger escribió junto a los guionistas Lesley Paterson e Ian Stokell, basada en el libro “Nada nuevo en occidente”, de Erich Maria Remarque, es una nueva versión del texto que ya había sido llevado al cine en 1930 por Lewis Milestone -llevándose la estatuilla a Mejor película- y al formato televisivo en 1979, con un telefilm del realizador Delbert Mann.
El filme sigue el derrotero de Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), un joven idealista y patriota de 17 años que, ilusionado, se alista con su grupo de amigos en el ejército alemán en 1917, cuando la contienda se encontraba cerca de finalizar.
Pronto, Paul se transforma en una pieza ínfima del ajedrez militar y político que se juega en otro lado, muy lejos de las trincheras plagadas de cadáveres, barro y el hambre y la miseria que tuvieron que soportar los soldados de ambos bandos en la llamada “Gran Guerra” que, se decía, iba a acabar con todos los conflictos bélicos.
Nominada en los Globos de Oro y los Critics’ Choice Awards, las posibilidades de “Sin novedad en el frente” gozaron de un fuerte empuje cuando se convirtió en la película más nominada de la última edición de los Bafta del cine británico, donde consiguió siete de las 14 candidaturas con las que arribaba a la ceremonia en Londres.
Con este galardón, no sólo dejó atrás a la participante argentina sino a la también reconocida “Cerca”, del belga Lukas Dhont, así como a “EO”, del polaco Jerzy Sokolimowsky, y “The Quiet Girl”, del irlandés Colm Bairéad.
